I'll have to dissent here. Potato peeling and toilet cleaning isn't their primary function. That's just something they do during down time. You'll want them there when they need to perform their primary function, in whatever role that may be.

That is the way it work on Gomer Pyle but not in the real world. I was in 25 to 30 years ago. In Germany most of the KP jobs were not done my soldier but by civilian contractors. They got the prevailing wage that you would get in the US for the same work. They were held mostly by the wives of service men. When I got to Saudi for Dessert Shield/Storm those same jobs were held by people from the Philipines and Indonesia. The firms negotiated the US pravailing wage then paid the workers far less. I saw it with my own eyes.

I've been to Korea a bunch of times.
There seems to be plenty of garrisoned troops there. And many of them didn't look like the type that were highly skilled.
And I did not get the impression that the Koreans liked having them around.
Just my observations, though.
Desert Storm was a war. That is quite different. The highest quality troops will be sent in. Just like Afghanistan.

I am simply saying it is wrong, and goes against the original intent of the founders and the Constituion they wrote for us.

Original intent or not, and I do not know, that is a much weaker argument than it sounds. Slavery was clearly their intent. As was dehumanizing native Americans. In many ways the FFs were great visionaries, but some of their "intents" were evil. This is not 1776 and that is in total a good thing.

That question is I'll formed until you decide the purpose of the military, and what you want it to do. Only then can you answer whether 1.4M is too high--or too low.

The things that CIVILIAN leadership has talked the military to do, 1.4M is too low.

Not so fast. You can actually make people and companies PAY for the military security they have. Increase the taxes to pay for what you get!

You have a rather out of focus view of actual military capability and cost in a REAL world. There are areas that are underfunded that should scare you sleepless.

I will, never, EVER agree with raising taxes. Or even keeping them at the current level.
I have no interest in my country being the policeman of the world.
Or being a welfare state, either.

That is reasonably obvious based upon your posts. And you have the right to feel that way. But I suspect yours is not the only view on that. I also suspect you a missing a lot of info.
