scam potential is high if she invited him, but he inviting her, I am not so sure.
I I disagree. scammers will set it up so it looks like the target is making all the decisions. they present an opportunity that will likely get a certain response. ie targeting a single older man with a young attractive needy woman who needs help.
there was a study done
there where young men offer themselves for sex to young women on first meeting and like 2% of the women agreed to have sex with them.

when young women offered themselves for sex to older men on first meeting over 75% of the men allowed the women to complete the sentence.

this why the young woman in this phone situation is referred to as bait. she is likely to get a bite. notice our older single man was not approached by an old woman a young man a child a mother Wheeling a stroller. very specific situation.

I'm fascinated by this stuff. you think oh these are just street level con artists but there's a lot of planning and careful consideration going into it.

But I would worry if youre married, that this was planned out and you were scoped out first and followed.
That would be a Honey Trap, and can be a issue if his wife suspects him of having an affair. Which the OP would have to answer for himself. However, if it just turns out to be dinner, no harm no foul.

You could be right, but his story is very normal.

You ever lose or misplace your phone ? You retrace your steps and ask people if they have seen a phone. OH, wait a minute. Because she is female and he is male = SCAM !

you left out a lot of details. the ones that make me suspicious are the appearance of the guy with the phone and her being impressed by the term standard deviation which high School level concept.do people lose phones and other people go looking for them and maybe a stranger helps sure. do about 30 other things in the story sound like a scripted event absolutely.

Before your imagination runs too wild she was impressed by my knowledge of standard deviation including articulating the formula ( with one small error which she corrected me on) . How many high school kids can rattle off the formula and how many everyday scamsters know it so precise that that can note the smallest of errors?

This reality is a far cry from the tangent you were going down where you said " her being impressed by the term standard deviation "

I would conjecture that HS students would have a higher likelihood of being able to recall the formula. Many of those formulas are taught in an introductory course, but for the more advanced coursework, you are offloading those tedious calculations onto computers.

But the real question is if you took a random sample of street scammers how many would know it exactly?

I'd guess one in 250,000 maybe ..

Well, that's why you look at a cluster of possible signals to make that determination...and that brings me back to my other question to you, what what her tone/ style of response to your overtures?

Did she come off as calm and well-practiced, or did she come off as coy and awkward?

She seemed a bit surprised about me asking her out but readily accepted.
She followed up with a Thank you text and said to let her know day and time .

Sure it wasn’t the Crocs you were wearing that impressed her?

Dude, have a great time (if all goes as planned and you actually meet up). If I were in the same boat, I’d definitely follow through. You seem like a smart guy who’s been around the block more than a couple times, so I’d imagine you’ll handle it all fine. There’s risk involved whenever we leave the house just to walk across the street, but especially if there’s a hot 20-something on the other side, I’m absolutely taking that walk!

Before you go I’d advise you to watch these 2 movies:

House of Games
The Spanish Prisoner

Both were written by David Mamet who has had a long fascination with “the art of the con”
I’m not saying this is definitely a set-up. If I were in your shoes I would probably go too, just for the adventure. But I would have my radar turned way up for anything that seemed amiss and might suggest things aren’t as they appear.
Anyway please post what happens on Sunday: good bad or ugly!

Halarious! Carlob, I was just about to post to see House of Games as well. It may be a bit outdated (80's), so possibly not as good as i remember, but I'll try to watch it this weekend as a 'preview' to what really happens with this adventure. Maybe this will be a movie one day too, it has the makings of one so far. I find that most likely the truth will be somewhere in-between, and things are never as good or as bad as we expect them to be. looking forward, and rongetcha .....Good Luck!

Love this thread!

My odds-

20% chance you bury the Bismarck
30% it's some sort of scam
49% she's a nice girl who wants to hang out.
(This could eventually lead to something)
1% chance she was born to swallow your seed

I think most guys here would be very happy for you if you hook up and she turned out to be a fun girl.

20%! That sounds high for any exchange of numbers, much less with the age gap. I think there's always the possibility of this being a scam, but given she knew the formula for standard deviation (highly unlikely for a girl running a scam), that he led the way (tho I acknowledge that's what scammers would want the guy to think), that they'd invest the time and energy to pull this act and then meet him for who knows how many times, makes me think it's just a new girl to the city who was grateful for the help, and caught off guard when he asked to meet up and now feels obliged to do it. Where Rongetcha takes it from there, is up to him.

If I was forced to come up with a conspiracy theory, then I would say it would have to be a targeted scam played for the long game, where they knew of Rongetcha's professional knowledge and boned up on investment and risk management lingo, knew he was likely to stray, and thought they could get enough out of him to play a much longer game than snatching a few hundred bucks off of him...most likely extortion to keep it secret from his wife or by his wife herself. Having said that....highly unlikely.

20% of banging from any girl you get digits from is high, but I think it'll be a fun adventure regardless...enjoy!

let's list our odds predictions for fun

50%: she cancels or no shows
20%: she is there for the free dinner
15%: she is open to sugar baby, probably platonic
10%: she asks for $ to show up for dinner
5%: she tries some kind of scam
0%: you get any sex
You left out the part about the kidney.
Maybe allocate a portion of the scam percentage specific to a kidney/organ related scam.
