First thing for sure I wouldn't suggest to start with indy's at a residence. So many unknown unknowns and extremely little control from your position. Start with an often-reviewed AMP, get the lay of the land, grow your spidey senses, grow your YMMV skills. Be polite, be clean, tip the appropriate amount and don't put saving a buck over getting the result you want.
Others suggest not starting, or "get a girlfriend", and ok these are options, but you asked for advice for rookie mongering. "Get a girlfriend" ok, but if you want to eat the same sandwich from now until you die go ahead, or figure out how to make her cool with the hobby or roll the dice risking half your shit. You will be most satisfied in your life by marrying and having your children, but mongering is fun as fuck if done right. If you can work it out to do both, that's the way.
The money thing, someone mentioned saving in 401k and then doing some calculation of the disposable income part and using this for hobby. This is important. The difference between it being a hobby and a habit is how you control the money and your discipline. First level for every person, hobbyist or no, is to feed yourself, and second is to save for the day you are unable to earn money to feed yourself. Everything else, sneakers, television, sailfoam, video games, fast car, all these are AFTER those first two, period. Everyone else in the world who hates their lives fucked up the first two. Get your money right.
I don't know how old you are, if you are very young then this is the golden time for this. You potentially are at your lowest earning value, but the arrow is pointing up up up. If you learn how to live correctly and within your means TODAY, and save properly for retirement, then EVERY TIME you get a merit increase or promotion, this money is FREE EXTRA MONEY, like for hobbying.
If you are bad at self-control, I highly advise like others have to not start. This is an expensive hobby, even at the once a month level (a 200$ once a month FS visit is more than my electric bill and sailfoam bill combined!).
But again, start in a very safe very controlled environment. When you were small boy, you didn't play baseball at Yankee stadium with Andy Pettitte pitching to you. You maybe played T-ball, with ball on T and you just swing away and the parents cheat and pick you up and run you around the bases. Going to a latina indy at her home that you read about on BP, well, that's not T-ball. Could be awesome, but you could be robbed or murdered or meet up with a fat smelly shitlady. Well-reviewed spa and girl, you already know how it will go, including reading others' "moves" to get what they want without hassle. Do this, then move on up when your spidey senses and YMMV skills are great.
