I think historically BOTH men and women have had things very very tough, and have tried to share their burdens together as life partners and make the best lives they could for themselves. There might have been some men in some cases who treated their wives as nothing more than property but I hardly think that was a widespread view or anything that would constitute a 'tradition' in America.
