Tony, have you ever tried Basil Hayden's whiskey?

Many moons ago, I was given a bottle. It was excellent bourbon.

As I recall, the bourbon or the distillery itself date back to the 1700s.
I have, a Beam Suntory brand. My palate is more towards the other grains, versus corn (bourbon), but their ryes are nice. The Caribbean Reserve Rye is nice (and my wife’s favorite), and their Dark Rye, which blends a small amount of port into the mix is unique and very exciting.

For those interested in playing with oak aging, I just got an email from Paglione, if you go to oak bottle.com, you can get a 20% discount off of the purchase of the large bottle and their Oak Age Experiment book. BOOKBUNDLE20 is the promo code.

Charliebrown, is that your picture? I like that glass, I’m going to have to search for a set.
Nope, after I tasted this whiskey, I searched for a picture on the internet and posted it. I like the closed ring glass to hold the nose aroma better. It usually takes me two weeks to go thru a fifth. A week vacation and this whiskey should get it down to half that time. ;)

I am trying to remember the old days, but when I did not feel like paying $90 for a bottle of Lagavulin, I opted for Talisker. Though I am not sure it was Talisker.
Most likely it was Laphroaig, maybe Ardbeg, but Laphroaigis the other pleated Scotch that you will find in most bars and restaurants.

Neat thing about Laphroaig, you can sign up to the Friends of Laphroaig Club, and as a member, you are granted a square-foot sized plot of land next to the distillery which you can visit at any time. Laphroaig pays each landowner a dram of their whisky in rent each year upon visiting the site.

What a creative idea that is to own a little piece of land like that.

The more I think about it, it was probably Laphroig. About the same type of nose and taste, but at close to half the price of Lagavulin.

Hey baddanu,

Yes, I went through my tasting notes. I tasted this in Edinburgh, April, 2019 - here is what I wrote at the time (I don’t have this one in my collection):

Nose: Burst of nuttiness, with hints of cedar, orange zest, and and toffee.
Palate: Creamy and nutty, sugared almond, with an old Sherry taste, and a slight tobacco note.
Finish: Short finish, with peppery, oaky warming effect in the back of the throat.

I did like it, but I don’t think I have seen it in PA or NJ recently.

I saw an article that listed the overrated Scotches as chosen by bartenders.

Glenlivet, Macallan 18, and Johnnie Blue, seemed to be the most mentioned.

The Scotch that most of the bartenders mentioned as being underrated was Highland Park.
