Safe at Osaka

The times I’ve been at Osaka I was able to score a parking spot right out front. Don’t leave anything remotely valuable in your car in plain sight. Walk like you know right where TF you’re going to. And keep your head on a swivel anywhere downtown after dark. If the Sixers get their way with a downtown venue bordering Chinatown, the whole dynamic will change around there. Probably not for the better.

Osaka isn't in Chinatown.

Hello gentlemen,
I am returning to Philly this weekend for the 1st time in 6 years. I want to go to Osaka this Saturday morning but with the Philly crime wave just curious if it is safe and parking availability. Thank you everyone!
if your roaming before lights out then it's ok, of your creeping after hours then don't walk stacked. I would wander after the bars closed and plenty of homeless people who were mongering for customers. they'd get freebies or other incentives. just park in the light and don't bring valuables in your car or on your person

I’m in the city 5-6 days a week. I am conscious of my environment more now than at any point in the last 25 years but I’m not allowing myself to become paralyzed with fear.

You just have to practice good ole street smarts. If an area is dark and desolate, with guys loitering use common sense or get an Uber to drop you off and pick you up immediately in front of your destination.

Also, travel in packs. I know the nature of our hobby stresses anonymity but a spa visit with a couple of buddies is always fun especially afterwards over drinks when stories are traded.

If we abandon the city we lose a lot of options that the burbs will never be able to duplicate. I drive past 6-7 spas on my way into the city simply because they don’t compare to Philly unless you like older providers, many of whom bypass safe practices to maintain customers. If we’re talking about risk mitigation, you MUST factor that in as well.

Just be cautious and keep enjoying yourself.

Pre-pandemic I used to hit Osaka in the evening when Katie or Gloria was there. That block of Chestnut always had shady people hanging out on it, more so than most of the surrounding blocks, but I never felt like I was in danger. Used to stop in McGlinchey's or Locust Rendezvous afterward for a couple cheap drinks, never felt unsafe walking around. How the next mayor and DA deal with crime and public safety is going to be critical.

I'm on the fence with the proposed sixers arena. That Market East or whatever it's called area of center city has always been dead as dirt after dark. And the Fashion District was out of fashion the day it opened. For me, the biggest issue they are going to have to figure out is parking. Most people who can afford ticket plans do not take Septa, and based on Septa's track record and safety record I don't see that changing. Including pre-season and playoffs, sixers prob average about 50 games a year. How many disney on ice, Globetrotters, circus and concert dates a year are there? That's a lot of open dates with nothing going on.

Lot of common sense by those responding to your question. IF for some reason need to go to Philly, body language important. As others said you are viewed by these street aholes as an easy target or not worth messing with. And with this perverted Philly DA kissing the ass of criminals with no bail and downgrading serious crimes, even if carrying, you could be the one hung out to dry if have to shoot one of his "friends". I feel I can handle myself but with lunatics running this city I made up my mind I don't need the city and no foot going in. If driving, just ck the number of car jackings---I think the number is over 1700. Someone I know on the south side last week observed a shooting on her block in a neighborhood previously owned by the good guys. These street scum have become embolden with JO DA Krasner. Wish he would house some of these in his house since loves them so much. One then could only hope for a positive result.

So how did it go? Did you enjoy your visit or did you bail?

Lot of good advice in this thread. Philly is definitely more dangerous than the burbs. But bad shit can and does happen everywhere.

One thing not mentioned is it's not a bad strategy to have a "fake wallet". If I go out at night I sometimes carry one.

Essentially it's a real wallet, but with no ID or actual credit cards. I fill it with cash, but small demoninations, like lots of 5s and 1s and maybe a 10 in the front.

If you toss the wallet you can run. Let them get away with a few bucks and you get away with your life. Good deal.

Maybe I need to revise my comments I got punched in the back of the head by some homeless dude today in center city. Right on market street. He started yelling gibberish. I did the usual ignore and kept walking and he ran up and hit me. Reflexes took over and turned around and charged him and knocked him to the ground pretty sure he hit his head on the pavement . He didn’t get up right away and was moaning. Stupid bystanders are good for nothing more than taking out cell phones and recording. Cops are an hour away if they show up at all.

I just bounced. Now my head is killing me. Stay safe out there.

Depend if you are able to parallel park or not on the streets. Parking lots/garages can be rather expensive. I can usually fit into a tight space. I can usually find a spot on Race St near broad Street. It is just a few blocks walking to get to City Hall. City Hall is only a block from Osaka. Sometimes I get lucky on Broad near Vine before Race Street. Also sometimes Vine Street has spots very close to Broad St. Walking down Broad and around City hall isn't too bad as long as it isn't too late. There is usually some kind of security to keep the rift-raft from thinking twice about causing trouble. There are plenty of cameras around. Walk down the main streets and stay clear of back allies.

At night on Market between 18th and broad I can usually find something on the streets. Friday and Saturday nights it is usually bad trying to find any street parking.

Homeless people begging for money, I will address them directly and look them in the eye and tell them "Sorry No." but I keep walking and don't stop to engage them. I have never had a problem when I do this. I think they get most upset when people don't even acknowledge they are there over and over again.

Damn man I hope you are ok. Hopefully some ice, Ibuprofen and a good night's rest will be all you need.

Good on you for knocking him down. I know experts will recommend never do that and always attempt to leave but when these fools do this stuff and nothing happens they keep doing it. Hopefully he thinks twice about doing that to someone else.

I am sorry to hear about your head, but I think that you handled the situation well.

Thanks! Appreciate it! In retrospect I should have continued to walk but in that moment I honestly felt like that was not the end of the attack. He hit me once; and I’m thinking I might be getting jumped/robbed. Who knows. It all happened so quick all I could picture in my head was those beating videos I see on the news and that I’m about to be a statistic. But it opened my eyes that sometimes ignoring and walking away isn’t enough. Has definitely left me with an uneasy feeling now.

Aggressive homeless guys are the worst. The ones who have been on the street a long time almost always have mental have issues (schizophrenic etc). Most of them are harmless if you ignore them, but I’ve seen violent ones before too. You had a normal fight or flight response. I think most of us would have responded in a similar way. You showed better control than most, by knocking him down and not pursuing any further! Hope your head feels better today. Don’t let that fucker scare you from coming back to CC!

PD, if your guy hit me solid in the back of the head, he'd have 4 broken knuckles to show for it, according to my parents. You did the right thing by assertively defending yourself, then immediately disengaging. Who knows if he was on something, just mentally troubled, or both.

Relative to the main subject at hand, pre-covid my office was on the block with Osaka for two decades, and none of my co-workers knew the place existsed (or my occasionally patronizing it). There are several garages within one block, at least one of them is 24-hrs/valet, and most of the others close at 11PM or Midnight. Nighttime garage rates are not expensive when compared to the session costs.

If you're the "need to see a lay of the land" type, just walk to the new W hotel and look around the lobby like a tourist. If you're OK with the sidewalk scene, walk out like you own it, go over to Osaka's door and go in. I've walked in during a crowded lunch hour on a nice day, and it only ever looked like I was going into an office. Same coming out.

The only thing I do not recommend is using Osaka's rear door on Ranstead street. It's in a dark corner between loading docks that the homeless regularly use as either an campsite, a toilet, or a stash location (or all 3 simultaneously). One never knows what you will smell or witness coming out that door.

To go one further regarding the homeless dudes- there was a psychiatrist in CC who was regularly helping out one of the panhandlers with a few bucks on his way to the train most days. Once he didn’t have any extra cash on him to give away, the bum beat the shit out of the doctor. No good deed goes unpunished.
