When I heard this song the first time, I was a pre-teen, and a pal was jamming with my sister and I in his back porch; he on guitar, I was playing his brother's bass, and my sister was banging on the drum set. Anyway, this song comes on, and in my head I'm thinking wow, and I started playing along. After it was over, and we were jamming again, I took what I thought I was hearing in that song, and started playing some riffs we had been writing, but playing them backwards, like notes in reverse order, and then tuned the bass down so it was a little out of tune. Of course this isn't what happens in the song, but it's what I heard and it was inspiring. We wrote a couple songs that afternoon with these reversed riffs. Anyway here's that dude's cousin on bass in this song:

I’m embarrassed to say i never appreciated the magnitude of Bowie genius until music basically became free and then discovered the countless magnificent Bowie songs that never got a whiff of airplay… fear of the ambiguous sexuality? There’s sooooo many bangers by that dude that were a bit too risky for radio or MTV rotation…

Same, I had always "heard of" Bowie, but never ever heard his music because it was never played (I grew up mostly in 80s). Totally was the final taboo of gays and ambiguously gay gays, the last one to fall in the 80s and 90s. Everyone talked about this awesome musician Bowie, but no one wanted to be the one to give him airtime. I have him in my Pandora rotation and when I really want a deep dive into non-traditional musician driven songs, like sitting in my car in a Wawa parking lot before an AMP session, he's on the list!

Speaking of sitting in a Wawa parking lot before a session, here's what's making 50 people stop and stare at old Vlad right now:

Yea dude! Nancy fucking Wilson... even though she's SEVENTY, she's still number one on my list of famous persons I'd pay everything to DATYO once. I met her many times, but at party after their HOF induction I spent almost an hour with her and her road manager, a mutual friend with my old school roomie. The whole time all I could think of was DATYO DATYO DATYO DATYO! And she was SIXTY then! I'd cash in all my chips today to DATYO her while she's tearing it up playing this jam ....

Hah but this one. You Deadheads can argue me in PM if you like, but wasn't the 91 tour the top top top of their game? The best lineup too, Bruce on that tour was amazing. In this one, I was at this show and it was one of my top ten shows ever. But dudes. Look at Mickey and Bruce when camera goes to them (if you don't know the Dead, Mickey is the darker haired one of the drummers, and Bruce is Bruce Hornsby, on piano, stage Left, your right.) they are so so so fucked up! Mickey is like so so deep into that drum kit, and Bruce's pupils have eaten his entire eye lol... and have to feel disappointed for Phil, he's like the lonely dude playing his bass all alone over there and I guess that's the most boring instrument in that band right?

For me it was ‘89 but judging from those YouTube clips I gotta say those early 70’s (70-72) were a whole other level of good…

Hah I can't disagree; sometimes I see an old Winterland show on youtube and wish I was 20 years older and had been able to see shows in that time! My first shows were in the 87 tour, I was 12, so my opinion is skewed a bit by these times. The old lineup was rockin, for sure though the 91 lineup was the most musically competent they ever were... and it was downhill from there :(

The tune you posted, the line "spent a little time on the mountain, spent a little time on the Hill," is a special one for me. My school was called The Hill School, and when I went on tour full time after school, starting in that 91 tour, every once in a while I'd be in the lot or in the show, and hear someone nearby shout that line along with Jerry, extra loud, and I'd look over. It was either someone I knew, or an old timer, and I'd go chat them up, and it turned out we were fellow alumni! Universe is so so huge but so so small :)

Enjoy this'n... my older sister and her pal were going to California for touring universities, and my girlfriend at the time (my wife today!) and I wanted so so badly to go along. She hadn't told us she was "really" going to see this show. We had saved some money from working on farm, and secretly bought plane tickets to go along with her. Of course back then it was much much different flying and such before 9-11. So us 4 minors somehow were allowed to fly across the country no question asked, again today I doubt that's allowed? But we spent the previous day before this show at Disney (which all 4 of us hated and we never went back!), and then this show. Any show with shorty short Bobby is a gem of course, but Terrapin has a special place even now for my wife and I, we laid out at the edge of the crowd, completely inside our first trips, kissing like how you'd peck your granny or something. It was amazing and sometimes we play this when we're really stoned and kiss just like this!
