Here’s more advice. Park as close as possible to whatever your destination is. Do not leave valuables in the car. Move briskly but don’t run to the building entrance. Keep your cell phone in your pocket and avoid eye contact with all other pedestrians. Repeat, in reverse, when it’s time to leave. Have your home address preloaded in WAZE and get the hell out of the area as fast as you can.

There are many neighborhoods in the city which are "statistically" safer than others. Wayne I am going to guess you live in a section with nice lawns, driveways and lower crime rates. If I am wrong and you instead live in a gritty asphalt jungle I stand corrected.

In Philadelphia:

As of last Friday, beginning 1/1/23, there have been 1,015 shootings; 208 of those fatal. 28 other people were murdered by other means for a total of 236 homicides.

In this same time period there have been 8,047 Violent Crimes reported that include Rape, Robbery w a gun, Robbery w Other, Aggravated assault.

Also in this same time period there have been 13,710 Stolen Autos; 7,197 Theft from Autos; 1,475 Theft of Motor Tag; 276 Theft from Person.

I am very familiar with the LaSalle University area and stand by my advice if that's where the OP is referring to. If he is talking about the High School it is quite safe until you head down Cheltenham toward Easton Rd., then strap on the Kevlar. Go the other direction toward Oreland and there's a sad little RnT that will get the job done, with out risking getting done in.

No one can sugar coat the apocalyptic failure of Philadelphia's leaders promoting/allowing this once vibrant and beautiful city turn into a cesspool in a very shirt period of time. Center City is a ghost own, hospitality industry is dying, tourism has tanked. Not a political statement, just reporting stats.

Kant, not sure why you have such an ax to grind about Philly. I live in Germantown which I am sure is on your grinding wheel's list. It's a pretty safe mixed neighborhood near the Wissahickon part of Fairmount Park, no lawns but not center city urban. I travel all over the city, just had lunch in Northern Liberties yesterday. Been in Chinatown (not all for spas) 3 times in the last week.

Yes the statistics are not good when it comes to crime but this is a big city and most likely guys coming to C Town spas are not going to be traveling in the worse neighborhoods at the wrong time of day. There are a lot of positive things about the city, no need to dwell on just the negatives.

Sorry if this is derailing the discussion.

I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer and I certainly don't want to pick on you, sorry for the kerfuffle.

Philly is a mess, IMO, and I am more saddened than axe grinding. When a bumpkin is visiting I think an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Yea Germantown is not the best statistically, but there are some amazing properties there. I know it well.

All good - be safe out there and good luck!

I can only speak to the La Salle Univ area of Olney from 1984-1989, when I was mugged on the street twice at knife point walking to/from the Subway. I lost a grand total of $10 - most of it in student SEPTA tokens. I stopped using the LaSalle University Library for research on term paper assignments after the 2nd time. Today the same experience would likely be a gunpoint, and significantly scarier for me if I only had $10 or less.

Ironically, I never was a crime victim at Temple U in my nearly 6 yrs as a student there, and it was long before before all the buildings on Temple's campus had stadium-like lighting shining down on the sidewalks.

Kant's numbers are accurate, but I think they are missing an important detail: the majority of victims of violent crime in the city know their assailants and live among them. The known-person relationship does not describe a random monger....unless that monger rolls up and parks at the curb in a shiny new Benz and drops a wad of bennies on the sidewalk getting out of the car. At that point, you're on your own, fella.
