That day if you were to line up the three of us, Me , the girl , and the guy who'd returned the phone... I no doubt looked the poorest the way I was dressed with my dirty old crocs ..

I have no skin this game. You asked for advise. My advise is stay away. You are being tricked.

Spanish Prisoner means a stranger approaches you uninvited and asks for help. It plays on our capacity for empathy, which lowers our guard. There is a volume quality to it, so "of means" can just mean you fit a profile (IE gender, age, alone or in group, tourist or local, laborer or professional).

I refuse to acknowledged anyone who attempts to speak to me on the streets in a major city. I just keep walking like they aren't there. When you've been burned enough you'll learn. They come up with all kinds of fun ways to try to get people's money. They have it down to a science. Maybe a couple of honest people are getting ignored, I am sorry about that, but I am not going to get scammed 99 times to help the one honest person.

So, if we alter his story and say she declined his offer to treat her to dinner, this would be a normal occurrence that happens dozens of times all across the city.

But, she accepted his offer for a free dinner. She still could cancel, no show, whatever, but just because she accepted the offer, suddenly it is a big huge planned out scam ? Scam potential is high if she invited him, but he inviting her, I am not so sure.
