To provide some context, that member wasn't banned because of that one thread...in fact, he wasn't banned at all. He literally asked for his account to be deleted, and we were happy to oblige.
But the background is that that member had been previously warned multiple times...getting into it with lots of other members (as well as the mod staff too), and he caused a number of threads to go off the rails with animosity, personal attacks, and just overall bad behavior. And while douchebaggery is not a bannable offense on our site (my spellcheck is saying both words are not real words but I don't care!), disruption to our members and community, and personally attacking them are serious offenses.
My personal feeling is that he is a dude who cannot have a discussion without him having to resort to petty attacks, nor does he have the ability to accept or even try to understand that there are other perspectives from other members. In his mind, his way is the only way, and while that itself isn't necessarily a problem, his constant belittling and attacking of other points of views were toxic to our board, and if it wasn't obvious, won't be too missed.
