Just wanted to see if any other folks here have gotten threatening text claiming to be cartel. Got one with my personal info saying that i reached out to one of their girls and wasted their time. Saying i need to pay of else they will take me and my family members out one by one. Not the kind of text one wants to get to begin the week. Wondering if I should just ignore it?

Upon my Google research, seems to be a common scam.

It's funny to hear at times but definitely if I was vacationing in Mexico or near the boarder I would for sure be spooked. They usually get your address with your number too if there's some type of connection.

Another scam out there is a person pretending to be the dad of a person you meet on a dating site and asking for money because she's depressed or younger than she mentioned. If your ever curious about a scam type what you see then reddit at the end because reddit is usually a really great tool

Took me completely off guard this morning, first the text then a phone call threatening me in Spanish. I have been reaching out to latina providers recently so it felt believable at first.

Yeah, got one of these cartel texts and they sent pictures of some cheap ass guns and severed heads etc. I sent a picture of my chosing and they stopped all contact. I knew it was a scam when they didn't even get the name of the cartel right.

I use one of those free VoIP apps with a phone number almost impossible to trace. I got few of those threatening txts. I just give them shit back and they those scammers get it and stop. Most of those idiots use traceable regular cell providers, so I run a search and tell them they can't trace me but I know where he lives and cops will be at his door soon. I told one One idiot that come on over and we will find out if his machete can bit my ak47! Never heard back from him!

Don’t use your real number! I use Hushed. I can delete the app and when I am ready I just download it again and it saves the convos. A 2nd phone can always be found and then you will be in trouble with your significant other.

Ignore those annoying texts. They are mostly fishing for info.

If you are transitioning to the options below inform the provider org that your number has changed for good.

Going forward :
Get a virtual burner number. Delete the app if you don’t need it or in case someone is spooning around.

Or you can buy a burner phone at a store with cash. Put a screen lock on the phone. Some say this is the ultimate in privacy.

A few years back I did. Just block them and ignore the texts. I backed out of a sketchy in call and then got similar texts for a week
