Been hobbying for 10+ years and have never had to provide any identifying personal info. References have worked fine for me. Have only had to truly walk away from a booking because of screening requirements a handful of times.

"These are the rules" only because that's what they want you to think. The reality is these are businesses and the well-run ones are happy to accept the right references/connections. It's only the groups saving info for blackmail etc that demand this stuff with no exceptions. And that should be a big enough red flag for you to never use their services.

Didn’t read all the posts in this thread…but, imho, you gotta read the situation/read the cop/read the room. I don’t think there’s one absolute way to go about encounters with LE. Sometimes you’re fucked so STFU. Sometimes the cop’s giving you an opportunity to not being an asshole and you have a polite encounter and you’ll be off on your merry way. There is one absolute rule though: don’t be a dick. That’s definitely not going to work. This seems like common sense but I’ve had friends start yelling at LE when stopped and I just shake my head. You don’t have to be a pushover, but be cordial in a non-condescending way. If it seems like I’m speaking from experience, I may be.
