I’ve been calling and texting for about a week no response. Tried again today, got a text message to call. Called and was put through 20 questions. Last question was for a reference. I know in some circles that’s needed but I’ve never been asked (namely because those who require it will put it in their ads). So I said sorry I don’t have one. And she said she can’t see me without it.
Since no one here mentioned that they needed a letter of recommendation, I’m guessing this is new for first timers or one of my other answers lead to me needing a higher security clearance. (Or they would just say anything to stop me from texting them).
Not angry or mad, just disappointed, and posting for others you might need a reference before they see you. Good chance you WONT need it, but be prepared.

I was not asked for a reference as I was a first time client. Perhaps like you mentioned the way you answered certain questions triggered a higher security clearance. I will add I was asked to show my penis at the door to confirm I was not law enforcement. So she could have made you do that on arrival if she was not sure about you.
