Single malt, neat.
I like to add a little bit of water especially when drinking cask strength whisky. Sometimes I remember to bring my eye dropper from home and I use that. If I don't remember I have them bring me a small pitcher used for cream for coffee and put water in it instead. Easy to add a few drops at a time.

water helps to oxidize the whiskey - same as letting a bottle of wine breathe after you open it. good call. (y)
Also cask strength tends to be so strong that the tongue burn masks flavors- there is a reason Single Malts are usually sold at 40% in Scotland (43% here for some reason?).
In a perfect world the water you add would be from the water the distillery uses to make the whiskey as they are very jealous of there own source H2O and claim it gets character from the Heather, peat and whatever it filters through to give distinctive tastes to the magic elixir. Bought some when in Scotland once and it can be had online.
