Correction Hoss Filipino would apply to the ethnic group as whole meaning male or female
Filipino usually refers to the language, although @coolguy is (correctly) pointing out the difference between filipino (male) and filipina (female). The more commonly accepted terms used, and preferred, by actual Filipinos are pinoy (male) and pinay (female).

Challenge!Holmes. Tagalog is the national language.Filipino can refer to the language and also refer to the ethnic group/race which consist of not male and female persons.

OK suit yourself. Filipino is the state-recognized national language. Since there were so many dialects in the Philippines, including Cebuano, Kampampangan, Waray, and, of course, Tagalog, the government decided to craft an "official" version of the language for use in international diplomatic and corporate/commercial relations. Tagalog is the dialect for the region in and around Manila, the capital, therefore it was used as the foundations for the newly invented merging of the dialects into what they hoped to be a universal language called Filipino.

actually to add to you language lesson. English is spoken more often nation wide than than Tagalog, being the English is the second language of PI taught in most if not all schools since WWII. Thats why for a foreigner its a great place to visit, language barrier is very very low

Correct. All schools in the Philippines teach both Filipino and English to every student, and English is the language used in government as well as most business documents there, right down to inter-office memos. Filipinos often will mix English words into informal conversations.
