I’m late April, I walked into my bank. I just woke up and went for a walk so I had a baseball cap, short sleeve shirt, slippers and shorts on.
There was a new branch manager and he gave me a dirty look and told me to take a number and wait for my turn. I told him that I have to open my safe. He told me that I need at least X amount of Won in my account in order to have a safe. I told him that I have a safe. He then shakes his head and asks for my ID. He then realizes that I do have an account and a safe. He apologizes.
So I told him to close my account because I’m taking this to another bank. He keeps apologizing but I took my business elsewhere.
Especially in Southern Seoul, they will immediately judge you by your appearance. smh.
Believe it or not, I actually prefer the formalities and miss those days when these things were expected.
I remember as a kid in the 70s my mother made me wear a leisure suit just to go on Eastern Airlines for the yearly trip to Florida.
Everyone was expected to dress well to fly back then.
I even had to wear nice clothes to go to crappy Shea Stadium when my father took me to Jets games with his friends.
And at Church, of course we had to dress appropriately.
And all the kids called the adults Mr. and Mrs., never by their first name -- that would have been a smack in the mouth at the least.
We've lost something...and I believe it shows, going by how things currently are here.
But then again, I am old fashioned.
I still wear a tie to the office. It comes easy to me. I've been wearing one since first grade...
