Peter Luger's got trashed in a review and it does not surprise me. A long time since I've been there, but even then, overrated when compared to other steakhouses. I thought DelFrisco's in Manhattan was better and Stage Left in Jersey does just about everything great.

One of the best steakhouses I'v been to was Shula's in Philadelphia. Everything was good, down to the double baked potatoes and dry martinis.

Steak house critic said shrimp tasted like cold latex, WTF, perhaps the critic has done CBJ, lol. The first thing I noticed as I viewed the photo in the story is a bottle of steak sauce, another WTF, IMHO, a good cut of beef, properly cooked needs nothing more than a pinch of salt and just a smidge of fresh cracked pepper. Good service and consistency is difficult to come by, more so nowadays. Whenever I desire a great steak, I prepare it myself. Thanks for the story, I’m going to follow it, see what happens, perhaps it was a good wake up call, I mean if service is lacking this article/review will serve to improve the business.

Best steak I've had was at Porterhouse NYC
I agree that some of the best steaks are made at home, but the high end steakhouses have access to some god tier meat. If you're paying under like $50 for a steak, you could probably make something just as good at home.

Texas has Bar B Que joints throughout, I hear folk rave about how good the bbque sauce is, I too like the sauce but same thing goes for good bbque, doesn’t need sauce if it’s good. I can’t see myself paying $75 to $100 for a good steak if it requires sauce. I’ll put sauce on potato salad, just like it that way. Give me a good steak cooked medium to medium rare and I’m happy. A ribeye cooked well done is okay too, it has more marbeling and can stand up to being cooked well. I’m sure NYC has some of the best steak houses in the country or so I’ve been told.

Can't stand the Brooklyn location. Long lines and servers with attitudes are spot on. Prefer the Great Neck location. But I only go when it's a place that's requested. I prefer to order a couple of Tomahawks from Vincent's in the Bronx and cook it at home. As good as Del Frisco's but half the price.

And as a native NY'ker who's been to tons of steakhouses, Chicago has NYC beat when it comes to steakhouses. They have a much longer history of processing beef.

Agree with the writer 1000%, been there numerous times, never a good experience. And they don't even take credit cards. Imagine those arrogant waiters taking home over 100K in tips a year, all unreported income of course. I hope they close them down.

I agree with the reviewer. My last time at Luger's was unimpressive, but they sure took the cash out of my wallet big time. It's like they're living on their past and think it's okay to serve mediocre steaks because they are "famous."

You can still get a great meal at Lugers no matter what the NY Times says. I agree the price is too high though. I usually have had good service there, and sometimes extra care was given without asking. YMMV I guess. I usually go to Great Neck.

I have never been to a top-end steak house that I thought was worth the money. Yes, the steaks can be very good, but I can go to my local butcher (a real one, not the supermarket kind) and get a hand cut special order, cook it myself, and have 3 or 4 that are almost as good for the price of one. If I spend big $ at a restaurant, which I have often, I want something I can't/don't cook myself.

Still over priced, but the best steak I have had at a restaurant was at the Pine Club in Dayton. Excellent food, very well prepared. Unfortunately the atmosphere left something to be desired (not dreadful, but not up to the standards of the food).

Aside from chop meat for taco night, I haven't bought beef in years. I kill 3 or 4 a year and it lasts until the next hubting season. I'd rather go to a good seafood place than a steakhouse.

Wolfgang's has been cleaning their clock for years. The closest branch to the Lehigh Valley is an hour drive to Somerville, NJ...well worth the trip
