I look for these things they put in lots that are parallel to each other and just big enough to put a car in. I find one close to where I'm going that's free, never pay, and walk to the business. Before I walk away though I put a big sign on the roof that lets everyone know I'm going to be in the MP in case they need me for some reason.
I think there are some basic common sense rules to follow
-Never park in another businesses assigned spot (obviously)
-if possible park in a common lot which gives no indication which business you are in
-try to avoid any metered spots (if possible)
-last resort part in the assigned spa spot (possibly embarrassing but the key is to avoid getting towed)

I used to frequent Nirvana on Oak Tree Rd. They are in the end unit of a primarily medical building. I always parked at the other end in front of a doctor's office. One day, at opening, I went in a was getting a massage when the back door opened and one of the attendants came in through the back door. Scared the shit out of me and my attendant. She said something in Spanish and then went to the front. My massage continued and when all was done, my attendant told me that I needed to leave out the back door and to go around to the left and that I would understand once in front. When I got to the front, there was a patrol car parked directly in front of Nirvana facing the front door. I walked calmly to my car as if I was coming from the doctor's office. I have not parked in front of an establishment ever since.
Some of that might have to do with what our personal life is like. It often depends on how much each individual has to lose. For example, your employment field and marriage situation. Someone might have quite a bit to lose, while others might not.

Billy-I could not agree with you more. If the spa is located in even a semi-residential area, and neighbors begin to see an assortment of unknown autos, trucks, and people in the area, it can become an issue.
Rear Parking Lots in a small or strip mall can be very good. For example, in the case of L.H. the lot in the back was perfect during the heydays of that place when they had a steady flow of visitors. You could safely park in the rear lot, walk up to the rear entrance, knock on the door, and typically be greeted by the friendly Mamasan.

LH..that was the place in Somerville correct? As i recall they were backed up to a residential neighborhood, I used to drive thru the neighborhood first to see how many cars were in the lot, you couldn't see from the front on the main road. If there were a few cars id keep going no point parking and going to the back door only to be told to come back later. I lived pretty close so it wasn't a big deal but I would never park in the neighborhood, there really was no reason to unless someone was afraid to park in the lot, LH had a decent sized lot.
