Anyone here have any tips about moving to japan? I have been there twice and loved it. Great food and a great place for this fine hobby. Any feedback welcomed.

A little background on myself.

1. Live in NYC area
2. Accountant
3. Wife and kids
4. early 30's
5. Looking to move there January 2024.
6. Would like to move there via remote work or getting hired with an international company.

Thank you

I lived in Tokyo for 9 months when I was in middle school and visit a family member who lives there every two years.

The homes are so damn small. If you’re a big guy then it’s going to be very uncomfortable.

Living cost is not cheap.

Transportation is well-developed.

Food is healthy and delicious.

It helps if you speak some level of Japanese.

Are you taking the family with you? I agree with everything the Chairman said. I've been 3x. Shinjuku is the place to hobby. At least that's where the Pink Salons are located. I wouldn't moved until I got an offer letter and some location assistance. Plus a work visa.

Personally i dont like Japan that much. Its expensive, cramped, overrated food, and blatantly racist. the girl side is great, and its very clean, but thats not enough.

but those opinions aside, it is pretty difficult to move there from everything i have heard and seen (have worked in Japan a few times, and live part time in Seoul now).

The VISA part is a huge barrier. its much harder to get than in the USA. your best bet would be to learn Japanese first, then try to catch on with one of the big 4 proservs in NYC, rotate over to Japan and then then jump to your customer. But its hard, and you didnt say if you were taking your family/had a financial cushion.

Hello. Thank you everyone for the feedback.
1. Yes, I would take my wife and kids with me. She is open to the idea.
2. Unfortunately I dont know japanese. I know basic mandarin but dont know how much that helps if any.
3. Financially, im embarrassed about that i dont know why. Probably because i feel poor compared to what i think you guys have/make. But to be completely frank I have about 100 k liquid. 100 k stocks. And own a property I would rent out with net income of about 3 k per month.
4. I was thinking of trying via investment, I think i read somewhere the minimum was 50 k.

Also, Mr. Chairman I am quite short so no worries there. I actually am good in small spaces.

I think the offer letter is great advice. I am definitely going to try to learn some japanese before I go.

BIGBOB62 is right—it’s very cramped and blatantly racist.

A family with kids will be squeezed in a very, very, very tiny home. Check out the YouTube clips. It’s no joke.

If you know basic Mandarin then you should know a few hundred Chinese characters which is a good start because the Japanese language uses a lot of Chinese characters too.

I appreciate the warning but I really dont think house size will be an issue. I will be looking up clips though. Maybe Thailand is better? I encountered the racism there but i really dont mind it either.

THanks again everyone

I found it interesting that you liked the food. I really didnt. I agree its healthy, but its very very bland compared to Korean food.

Korean food, IMO, was lacking in fresh vegetables.
Everything was pickled/salted. The only time I got fresh greens was at BBQ places. The lettuces to hold the meat.
I love it and always will, but they need more fresh vegetables in their diet.
Was hard even getting good fresh greens at E-Mart.

Thailand is much nicer IMO. I considered it when I picked Seoul. The negatives:
1. the economy is a lot more up and down in Thailand, and the government isnt as stable.
2. foreigners cant own land in thailand. they can in japan and korea.
3. its freaking hot around Bangkok where most jobs would be. I go there often and deal with the heat for a couple weeks at a time, but wouldnt want to live under it full time. its much more moderate in Japan and Korea.
4. there isnt as many jobs in Thailand. Not as many international companies as the other 2.

ultimately i decided to live in Korea once i retire, and monger in Thailand. Its like a 5-6 hour flight.

-The stability does make me second guess it.
-I keep watching youtube channels of old japense houses and I would want to buy one. An hour outside tokyo doesnt seem too bad.
-I have also had the privilege of living in seoul. I wish NYC was built more like seoul. I havent lived in Japan only visited so not sure which one I would pick afterwards.
-Unfortunately, my wife is chinese. I fucked up. Shouldve found a korean or japanese. I was considering living in China but thats not even an option I would want anymore.
-Since this post I have searched a lot of job sites etc. Seems like most if not all require japanese. Only the english teaching jobs dont. Ill keep looking.

No.
Just could not get good fresh vegetables there.
Haven't been since 2014. Hopefully is better now.
Last place I stayed was way up on the hill in Sadang. Near the hiking trail.
So beautiful. Really miss it. But have no reason to return...

Japanese will be required for most jobs. English teaching jobs are crab and don’t pay much so disregard that.

I miss Seoul. Two years ago, I dropped off my 5-year-old nephew at his English language school and I had two hours to kill so I went to a nearby amp. lol.
