I creating a discussion thread to respond to rAMPage comment on a review thread so I “don’t get fined (aka banned)”
I agree with his criticism of my comment complaining about the snakiness on the board was itself snarky and for that I apologize. I let my frustration with what I see on the board get the better of me. If you see my posts, I typically don’t comment when providing helpful information that is lacking and should have done the same here. I will say that I think it odd that he would correct my behavior when so many other examples exist on the board that have gone without mention by moderators. But in the end, he was right to criticize my post, and I apologize and won’t let that happen again.
AMPage response to my post did surprise me however and I wanted to respond to what he said because I think it will help give clarity to us all. rAMPage stated “The reviewer is free to add the phone number or not …That is their choice to add or not.” Honestly, this came as news to me. I understood the reviews needed to be completely filled out and the information requested was considered mandatory. This contradicts what TopJimmy says in his pinned post “Would you like your reviews to be approved?”. In that post he writes: ”Phone: Make it easy for the reader, please. Put a phone number in this field. This post was the basis I used to fill out a review and the standard for reading other reviews. Still, it remains unanswered why it’s permissible to write smart-ass comments instead of just leaving the field blank. It defines the culture of this site and not in a good way.
So which Moderator’s direction do we follow, rAMPage (all information requested is discretionary), or TopJimmy (fill out completely)? Is that post (Would you like your reviews to be approved?) now obsolete?
I have been apart of quite a few boards and have benefitted from many people providing helpful advice that has saved me from many bad experiences. Even here there are folks who have been generous towards me and helped me a great deal. That is the primary reason I try to add missing information to help others and spare people what I consider needless work. If you look at my posts where I challenge or criticize, it’s always for the betterment of the community not about how a policy affects me or in a self-interested sort of way (unsafe practices of providers and whether that should be public knowledge, private details that will promote useless fake reviews, and complete information so they are helpful to the reader, etc.). I have abided honestly to all the requirements of the site, I don’t play games or try to circumvent the rules. I also make every effort to assist others with information in order to be helpful.
This board has a tone and tenor unlike any I’ve experienced before. The incessant rudeness is too prevalent and unnecessary and although I don’t think moderators can control it, I do think moderators can influence its diminishment.
