I have a very close friend who is planning to have this surgery for the standard enlarging prostate. He doesn't want to go the drug route. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Not me, but I considered it when diagnosed with very mild BPH. Any prostate surgery, even green light laser, can impact sexual function. There are some reviews and a couple of studies suggesting the risk is less with green light laser than with other surgical procedures (including other forms of laser treatment), but there are also studies showing that laser surgery of any sort can have a negative impact. From a risk perspective, the drug route seemed like a much safer alternative to me and I chose it rather than any form of surgery. So far, it’s been the right choice for me.

Your friend’s situation may differ in terms of the severity of his enlarged prostate or if there is any reason for him to be concerned about cancer, so he should probably discuss this with his doctor rather than relying upon any info we can provide here.

@Anodyne672 Thanks for the response. What you wrote was basically my argument against the surgery. What he said was that the risk of ED was rare. For me rare is not the same as NIL. I am of the opinion that once you are cut, you are cut. If the doctors make a mistake then you cannot go back in time to correct it.
