I ran into this with TER memberships. I used TER pre-Covid when I uses to travel much more. Love this site but if you travel out of state a lot TER is great.
You can use a major Gift Card instead of your credit card for a membership. It is also nice because they can't ding your credit card monthly. I paid with cash and purchased the Gift card, redeemed it for the same value as I would of with my Credit Card. The VIP membership lasted just as long.
There are accounting issues with gift cards that make it better for the retailers to pay a % of cash to be able to get the gift cards redeemed quickly. These transactions may also be outside of normal monitored Credit Card transactions and thus in the shadows.

Don’t do it. Especially with eBay gift cards. I got scammed once. They tell you the hotel or address to meet them but before you come they want you to get the gift cards instead of being cash. When you get to the hotel or whatever address they gave you, they gonna tell you to scratch off the code and say you can cover up the first set of code with your finger and take a picture to send them. They will tell you that you have to do it to prove your not LE before they give you the room number/the exact address. BUT the part your covering with your finger is actually printed on the card and you are revealing the pin code/the rest of the gift card number for them to swipe your balance out of your card. Within a minute, they already got you. They open bogus eBay seller accounts and falsely sell something for that set amount. They have everything set up and within a minute it’s over before you even know it. So… NEVER FALL FOR IT
