If the Viet girls here are any indication of the girls in Vietnam, then I think you are in for a wild time. I personally hated Thailand (Phuket). But had an extremely great time in Cambodia, Pnom Penh. The sidewalks are literally filled with women and only 5-10 mongers. You will have a great time just chilling with the girls before taking one home. $5 lady drinks, bar fine depends on where you go. $50 ST , 75-100 LT. Don't need to pay more you are probably the only monger they’ll speak to the entire night.
I've been in all 4 of those countries, Thailand , Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam. I never got the vibe Americans were disliked anywhere, or that there's anything to fear from communists. That's old time American media and government BS. Vietnam is really more of a Chinese version of communist anyway, meaning it's really capitalist and everyone is mostly interested in making money. So if a cop pulls you in, it's because he thinks you will bribe him to get out. That problem is worst in Thailand. Of the 4, I prefer Laos because it's very cheap, not very many other. Mongers, pretty girl, less drinking. But they are all great places for this hobby. Personally I decide based on other factors, like beaches and tourism spots. But if you're heavy into the bar scene, pick Thailand or Vietnam.
I’ve been to Vietnam three times in the past two years for business and agree with your take. As far as doing business is concerned, they have pretty westernized attitudes and mostly appreciate the American investment. Went out to some bars and clubs and the younger generation is highly influenced by western media and K-pop. I didn’t have time to hobby but there were a number of barber shops with 10s standing outside.
Only legitimate advice on here. Also check out Nguyen Phi Khanh st. Linh Cherry is in Japan Town, plenty of lady bars and AMPs there to choose from. This area is pricier than those outside of it though. There's also a club nearby called Lush that will have working girls there. You can negotiate with them and bring them back to your hotel or let them bring you to one. I would also suggest you ask advice on international or Asia forums.

I was in the north Vietnam with my Chinese family in 2007 for 2 weeks. They kissed the ass feet and wallet of my in-laws but were very unfriendly to me. I don’t know, I was the only non Asian in a van of 8 Chinese people driving from China over the border throughout north Vietnam. We only spent a few days in the Hanoi so we weren’t focusing on the tourists spots where you were. But maybe you’re right. I found the north of Vietnam to be insanely polluted, kind of like a cesspool of Chinese manufacturing.
I do love Asia, but the most fun I have ever had traveling has been in Africa. They really know how to make you feel welcome.

I was wandering around the Northern part of Vietnam along the China border in my homeless Jesus look in the late nineties and and they were not exactly friendly. This was right after a stint in west Africa so I was a bit jaded by the warmth and kindness I experienced in the motherland.
I did hop over to Taiwan after Vietnam and had an amazing time. Taiwan is Amazing! I didn’t monger then, but there were providers everywhere and it was legal then. Those days are over now.

Nope, I wear clothes from old navy, fashionova, etc, I have a cheap pair of glasses from zenni, and frequently wore crocs over any footwear. Basically, I do not have the rich American look. In fact, I've been lucky to have been able to make friends with locals. I went to Vietnam as recently as this year. People were friendly and no one was trying to scam me. Maybe the shoe repair guys at worst. Hung out with locals and didn't even have to drop a dime a majority of the time. Never once felt unsafe either. Probably got scammed more in my three weeks in famously safe Japan than my many many months in Vietnam.
