I have a back log of viagra and cialis and some expired. Does anyone know if they are still safe to take? Google gives me conflicting information, wondering if anyone here has taken expired pills.
FYI I am NOT looking to give these away because of legal implications in case something happens. I'd just toss them if its deemed unsafe to take.

I think the official line is always going to be “it’s unsafe” for liability reasons. But in my experience; it’s not.

It’s tough to get oxy. I have kidney stone attacks. So I’ve taken pain pills 5+ years old. They still work. Maybe a tad weaker; maybe a bit of a longer fuse (meaning longer to take effect). But again; in my experience, not unsafe. I have a years worth of cialis that will expire long before I use it and I’ll have no issue taking the expired pills (I have before) Again just my experience and ymmv

I would ask your doctor or pharmacist for their solid opinion. If it's a discretion thing, call any pharmacy and ask for the pharmacist. They will likely weigh in, even if you didn't fill the script there.

For what its worth:

1- my wife is a pharmD. She ok's using my expired (more then a year) generic viagra. Says it loses potency as it ages, but overall safe.
2- used it yesterday and worked as advertised....

The expiration date on pills is basically it's half life date. The pills become weaker at the point and may not be equally effective as their newer counterparts though they are still safe to take. Just use caution.

EXP DATE are required by law. We assume it is for our safety but it is probably a law driven by drug companies to increase the flow of drugs.

There reason for the data is to assure FULL POTENCY and/or SAFETY.

I can also imagine if we read the law, there would be a maximum EXP Date so the manufactures would not have to verify drugs that will last a very long time.

Most EXP dates are probably driven by potency.

I've done professional work in clinical trials - drug has expiration dates and will be tossed if not administered. And this is in a space where trial sponsors are always trying to save money everywhere they can. But they won't risk bad clinical data on a less potent drug kit.

It's not going to hurt you, but it might not work as well.
