Even in America with so much corruption in gov! I have recourse! And we are armed! Lets keep it that way! :) As it started and always will be! It's about protection, not aggresion
I have to agree with Ben Franklin. He said, "Those who are willing to sacrifice essential liberty for a little false security are deserving of neither security nor liberty".

From what I have read, this is a misquote that had nothing to do with surveillance of citizens. It was a pro taxation quote, written over a dispute between the Penns family who were resisting having to be taxed by the government to pay for security for those other than themselves.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety"

That aside, what are you willing to sacrifice for a lot of security?

I can believe that. There are a lot of misquotes out there, along with revisionist history and I don't always have time for research. My bad. I still like the Spirit of '76 in that misquoting. I have never had any real feeling of security in this world so I deal with things as they come up. My attitude is probably best summed up in one line from an old song called "Sunshine". (I think I got the title right). The chorus says, "He can't even run his own life, I'll be damned if he'll run mine". To answer your question on security, I am willing to sacrifice little to nothing since I have never had a sense of real securuty to begin with.

President Eisenhower was Ben Franklin's equal on this; perhaps even a step better. He raised two points:

1. We'll bankrupt ourselves in the search for complete security. 2. If you want complete security, try prison.
There you'll have three squares a day, armed guards, and barbed wire.

One of my few favorite presidents. I voted for him in grade school. (My family were all registered Democrats so I could vote. Had to keep that vote to myself). He also told us to be wary of the military industrial complex (war for profit).

I think the quote is interesting the way you posted it, it provokes thought, and because as much as I don't want to sacrifice the freedoms of liberty, we have, and will never know the full extent. For the most part we are pretty secure.

The older I get, the more I appreciate the wisdom and greatness of the man. Truly one of the great men and leaders this nation has ever produced. If anyone takes the time to read one of the biographies of the man, they will learn much about strength, character, and decency.

And there are many who want welfare, medicaid, head start and other handouts.
And like idiots, we keep letting them in and giving it to them.
I have a slightly different perspective on why we are idiots, selfish and short sighted, by abandoning a neighbor.

The vast majority want a fair day's work and wage, and they earn the social programs that come with living and working here. How do you weed out those few who want everything for free from those many who don't?

Consider this, our new administration cut a meafer amount of aid to the Northern Triangle countries in central america and maybe/ almost certainly has something to do with what is happening. The many billions we spend on fences could be used to build countries.
