if you’re willing to pay, mysudo has been great to me for the past 5+ years. depending on what plan you get, you’ll be able to generate profiles/“sudos” with a usable email and phone number (talk/text). I use it for other things too when i don’t want to give out my personal info, like fb marketplace or email sign-ups.

don’t really use the other features (virtual cards, private browser) so i can’t speak about those.

If Google Voice or Text free ain't for you, then get another smart phone. It'll be really weird for you to have a star tac or og razr or Nokia or Zack Morris's phone. People might think you are a time travelling drug dealer.

I can't think of a reason not to use Google Voice or similar though.

If you guys are using Googl Voice -- that's associated with a Googl account, that's associated with your phone's IMEI #. Pretty easy for Googl & everyone else to know it's you.
Even if you use a 2nd SIM card, it's still associated with your phone's IMEI # -- so your carrier knows it's you, too.

thxs for all replies...funny i do have a Samsung flip but upgraded to iphone a few yrs bck... Im not tech savvy at all...i'll prob look for a trac phone since i dont have a samsung...dimw77 thxs for the heads up w/ google voice..
I'm in same boat as far as being tech savvy. Every time I've ever tried to add an app to a smart phone, I've managed to fuck it up royally and needed somebody to help me unfuck it up and get it done right. 100% lifetime failure rate on trying to install an app on a phone myself. Sigh.

One of the guys I came across in this hobby uses an app on his personal cell phone. It works well for him and he has an Android phone because his wife has an iPhone and he doesn’t want to participate in the find my phone app. For those in a similar situation this info may be of value.

I found apps to be just a bit clunky but I never really stuck with one long enough to get used to it. I prefer a separate burner phone, at least so far.

When you buy your phone, use cash & wear a mask & hat to throw off the facial recognition. Park far away to that your face isn't associated with your car / license plate.

If you do the TracFone, be sure to keep it turned OFF when you're at home or work; AND NEVER have it ON when your personal phone is ON and with you. Every mobile phone that's ON is constantly pinging the cell towers & triangulating the signal strength for each tower to get a location for each phone. It's pretty easy to go thru the phone records and figure out which pairs of phones travel together. DHS has infinite storage for this kind of data.

Easy enough to know if a guy is a monger, because there will be records of calls & texts to phone #s of WGs. We're in a surveillance state. Most people just don't know it yet.

I believe it......
but out of curiosity.....
would cell phone companies....
(Verizon, tmobile) be able to tell if cellphones travel together?

Yes, and LE has ready access to tools that track cell phones. It is very easy for them to look back and see that phones traveled together.

Do what you can to stay under the radar but there’s only so much you can do. If you have a burner maybe it helps to use a different provider than you have for your main phone.

I’ve not read much about the pros/cons of phone apps, if they provide more or less anonymity than a burner phone.

This and all preceding recommendations are excellent advice. But here's a counterpoint.

If you are concerned about subpoena level discovery, follow that advice to a T and it will greatly decrease though not eliminate the risks. With a subpoena you are supposed to give up all phone information you have registered or not.

If you are only concerned about an SO finding out, you'll have to weigh whether you can follow these instructions AND how easily you can conceal a second physical phone. Using an app greatly eliminates the latter, but you run the risk of someone seeing and opening the app along with the surveillance/subpoena issue.

My main point is that convenience plays a factor in this too.

Lots of good advice.
Get a burner phone like Tracfone and keep it turned off when not in use.
Get a separate email.
Use a separate computer and browser for research.
Lock them all down.

I was very meticulous (maybe too much) in purchasing a burner phone for the hobby. As others have stated that a google voice or other extra numbers through apps on your public facing phone may be easily discovered for anyone who wants to look (SO especially)

1. Probably super obvious... pay everything with cash or visa gift cards purchased with cash: phone and plan cards. No paper trail. Also wear a face mask, hat and baggy clothing when purchasing items (I'm very paranoid)
2. Because of my cash/vgc rule, I went with tracfone as you can still purchase the phone and cards seperately with cash.
3. Get a cheap burner smart phone. Why? Some PO send stuff that requires internet access and flip phones are a pain-in-the-ass to use in a pinch. A smart phone can also be used to set up a burner email and conduct hobby research.
4. Doing everything with cash adds extra hurdles moving forward, don't forget to keep the phone active. I've had to rescreen once when I forgot to reup the phone plan and had to get a new number.
5. Burner phones are most likely android, so don't use a gmail account with your phone (they track everything). It's not required.
6. Again probably super obvious, don't text or call your burner phone with your public one

Some fine folks have already said, but turn off the phone before returning home. In fact don't use it there at all! Despite all these conditions I'm well aware that no privacy or security measures are perfect, but I feel comfortable with the level that I achieved with this method.

I use a separate device. Pre-paid minutes and airtime. All done through "top-up" cards paid with cash. Zero connection back to yourself, even with forensic accounting
