Recently, I've been writing short fiction inspired by my experiences in this hobby. I'm happy with the results, and have started a novel (a thriller) also set in this world. I am curious if a non-judgemental book with a sw protagonist could be accepted by the 2024 publishing industry, and if there's anything i should be aware of or thinking about while I work on this.

I know there's some writers or publishers out there - some of you write too well to be total amateurs! If you have some experience or knowledge, and would be open to (anonymously) discussing, please reach out to me DM! I'd really appreciate it.

My only advice is that women account for 80% of fiction sales, so if you want to interest a publisher, I'd write it in a way that appeals to women (whatever that means).

Jpnt, I know quite a few people who have self published. It’s actually quite easy compared to 15 years ago.
Easier to self publish now but in the past it was easier to get noticed and make money with this type of “zeitgeist” writing.

The old New York Press was an independent paper that was a springboard for many Gen x writers writing this Type of stuff. Jonathan Ames, Jim Knipfel Dave Eggers, Amy Sohn and a whole bunch others got noticed writing dirty little articles and went on to bigger better things.

I remember it well. I used to lust after Amy not knowing what she looked like, but imagining exactly my type and she clearly was a dirty little birdie according to her work. I met her years later at the Park Slope Food Co-op. Just another Brooklyn mom, no different than any other up and down the aisles.

Thanks. I know two who are in the middle of it now. To TIskier’s point, it’s the same as independent film — cheap and easy to do it now, but sooo much more competition.

Good point.
The Extra Man (I believe was the title) by Ames was a fantastic book. He was a fun read.

The days of writers like Ames and his forebear Bukowski are unfortunately over.

I would be interested in reading a self-published book by a sex worker who candidly describes life in the biz. Anyone know any titles?
