It's a terrible idea to leave a tip out, on the chair or whatever, before massage in hopes of skipping the negotiation, even if I know I'm going to want extras and have a good idea what the place/RA usually asks, right? I assume they just take that as a starting point and negotiate for more anyway, right?

Agreed that this is fine with a previously seen masseuse, but not sure about brand new girl, esp in a brand new establishment. There are a few spas around the bay, where the going rate is the same and in those spots, you don't place the donation, but just grab ass and go from there (massage is for relaxation after).
