Wallstreetdesires. Despite the name. I think nyaf is
You didn't say NJ where so I am going to assume you are probably 30 min away from Manhattan driving wise so I would NOT Recommend PARK and RIDE into NYC. And it's not about the cost, if you do the math, it's gonna be a wash for driving vs. train but you have your sanity.
These days, driving into NYC -- and you should validate yourself. If you are right across the River from Hoboken or Fort Lee. It takes 20 minutes to get into the city. The traffic is like nothing. when I need to go into the CITY, I would drive maybe 40 min total, 20 min to either Weehawken or 20 min to Holland.
Then the rest of the 20min is literally going to Chinatown (or Holland) or Midtown 30th thru 58st WEST side. If you want to get to EAST SIDE for Some of other spots like R&R then it's maybe another 5-10 minutes due to more cross town traffic.
If you were to take trains, Hoboken train to Manhattan takes 20 minutes or so, then you have to WALK your ass and WALK BACK to train and WAIT for the train then ride BACK TO NJ then get to your car then DRIVE home. Fuck that shit...
I rather get in my car and not have to walk and stand on the train only to take a long ass time to get home after getting to my car to drive.
Cost: it's $15 to drive thru tunnel or bridges. I ALWAYS time it so I am at the place where I want to go by 5:50PM or close to 6PM because most parking spots open up at 6PM. There are some commercial only to 7PM but there will be 6PM free spots or I would pay at 36th street $5 for an hour (cuz I only do 30 min sessions most of the time. If you're going to say some place near 29th and Park/Lexington, all spots open at 6PM so I literally would sit in my car for a minute until 6PM then it's free parking.
It's summer. It's gonna be hot as fuck, I can enjoy the AC and be faster going INTO the CITY and faster coming out of the CITY.
There are exceptions. Avoid Friday afternoon as it's always a cluster fuck.
And yes, I drive thru tunnels even if it's 5PM, 5:30PM. 5:40PM. It's cake, just short traffic and I'm in the city and traffic is usually light.
I've done many times, go in, appointment ready at 6:15pm. if I go in earlier, there are also parking spots that are 9AM-7PM then I would just pay it to 7PM then I can stay longer for free like getting a meal after I ate the girl.
Weekend, same thing except you Sunday is free parking everywhere and Sat could be busiest with tourists. Otherwise, it's always driving as it gives me most flexibility. Imagine one place you have to walk and you need to walk again. I just hop in my car. And if I need to go someplace far to eat, I'm in my car.
Anyway, if you are 20-30min away from the tunnels, just drive in and time it. Just start doing some google routes around 4:30 or 5PM to gauge traffic time. I would never take the train cuz that's just takes longer and not comfortable in the heat.
Driving and parking in the city is not hard but takes some practices to know where to go and how to get around quickly. There are apps such as spotangels to give you an idea what the parking rule/meter is near by. If you must park at a garage cuz you're an amateur NYC driver ....
then you can use SpotHero to get some discounts.
