Reading to Hazleton - Not just the railroads that have died

A trip up memory lane as I traveled Rt 61 to the Blue Mountains for those old enough or around long enough to remember all the great spas along the way. Unfortunately, after the big shutdowns a decade ago, nothing has returned to Reading, Temple, Leesport, Shoemakersville, Schuylkill Haven or Pottsville. Hazleton and Wilkes-Barre still have some options. Those who remember Sun Spa, there is good news and bad news. It is still a spa ------ but a doggy spa. Further along, the old farmhouse on the left before you get to Leesport Diner has been torn down. Corn grows there now. Peace of Mind in Shoemakersville was a place you could get a lot of kinks out. You still can, but the space is now occupied by a chiropractor. And so on and so on for all the others. There were so many options back then, and so much on the menus. Mostly K-girl spas, and a few caucasian. Now, apart from the obligatory stop at Cabella's, not much to look forward to other than to take in the beautiful countryside and mountains. Makes me appreciate living close to Philly and Wilmington.

I know the feeling. I'm from Hazleton area. If a few more spas close there will be nothing left to do but try to find a $20 whore somewhere. A few spas that closed and reopened just aren't worth visiting anymore.

never been to sun spa. Only places I've been to was Pacifica and regency. Spent a lot of time and money on lancaster ave. I miss those days.

Yeah, those were the days! Up and down 61 there was an American place just North of Haven (forget the name), then there was Aroma in Orwigsburg, Pacifica (became Xstreams?) around Leesport, one below that (Sun Spa?) Then in Reading, Ocean, Sports, Silver AMPs and Regency and Odyessy American places. A whole lot of $ well spent!

Oh man I remember Recency in Mulenburg near the mushroom farm. Remember that little spa that was located in the same space as the Hess gas station on route 61 I think the town was Schuylkill Haven, I might be wrong I'm going back 20 - 25 years

That was Aroma Spa. What was the American spa between Schuylkill Haven and Pottsville? Spa 61?

My first amp experience was with Jennifer at Balance Wellness Spa between Reading and Kutztown. I lasted all of 2 minutes and was hooked. I'm in northern Lancaster County and needless to say Berks County worked well for me. Ocean Spa was only 15 minutes away and I spent time at XStreams for a change of pace. I did spend a lot of $$ at Elite. How the times have changed......

I haven't been to Wellness. My first was Paramount which became Pacifica and then XStreams. That was in the mid 90's. I have sometimes thought about what kind of sports car I could have bought with the money spent hobbying. No regrets!
