I’ve met a lot of pro athletes, actors, politicians and others over the years including Elizabeth Taylor, John Houseman, Michael Keaton, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole, Robert Byrd, Hugh O’Brien, Coretta Scott King ((MLK’s widow), Joe Biden, Jay Rockefeller, Jon Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, the guys from the band Chicago, Pat Benatar, the GoGos, Roy White (NYY outfielder), astronaut Judith Resnick, Mike Farrell from M*A*S*H, Rocky Bleier, Lynn Swann, John Stallworth, Pete Rose, Jay Johnstone, and many, many more. Sometimes met them through work, sometimes while traveling, sometimes at events. The friendliest was Bon Jovi; the most arrogant was Liz Taylor; and the craziest (and I mean it in a complimentary way) was - without a doubt - Jay Johnstone.

Interesting about Bon Jovi. I met him and the band in 1983.

They were not unfriendly, but they were the cockiest guys imaginable for a bar band with one song just starting to get airplay.

When I met Jon Bon Jovi about 10-15 years ago, he was already a parent and that - along with aging - seems to mellow a lot of the rock stars who hit it big at an early age. Not only was he friendly to me and the folks I was with, but he also made a point of giving a young fan one of his guitar picks. it was a nice thing to do and really made the kid’s day.

For Phillies fans, here is a Jay Johnstone story. I was on the phone with him one day while he was at home in California. We are talking and he suddenly lets out a string of curses. I ask him what’s wrong and he say, “Didn’t you feel that? We’re having an earthquake.” I said, “Jay, that would be one hell of an earthquake if I felt it here in Philadelphia.” There was dead silence on the line before he gave a quick laugh, said he had to go, and hung up.

That makes sense.

As an aside, the night Bon Jovi played as an opening act when I was working as a roadie, the entire payment to the band for their performance was $1,000.

I handed the check for $1,000 to him.

Ran into Michael Jackson twice. Once at a hotel elevator in Hawaii, then at a restaurant in Florida.
I knew someone who worked for Jackson for 25 years. For all those years, my acquaintance said that holding an adult conversation with Jackson for more than a few minutes was impossible.

Here are a few

Ron Jeremy= At an adult convention. It was actually my GFs idea to go; not mine. He was cordial. But he was far more interested in the attractive women (hence why he's in jail now)

Robert Patrick= Nicest celebrity I've ever met. The only one I've ever met that I could just talk with nerves free, like a regular person. He was just engaging and loved to talk about his movies (most are sick of it)

William Shatner= I've heard he was a jerk, but I had a good experience with him. We chatted and he was nice.

Kevin Smith= Total phony. He is good at pretending to give a shit about the adulation he gets. But the act quickly comes down and its apparent he is a miserable person.

Robert Loggia= He clearly had dementia. I felt bad.

Ernest Borgnine= Such a nice guy. He was in his 90's and still had the energy of a guy who was in his 50's; just a bit deaf.

James Gandolfini=Meeting a legend in his prime (during the Sopranos). Cordial, but I could tell he hated being a celebrity.
