Facial recognition software?

So after walking into a local spa, I was asked to look at the "device" to have my temperature taken. Beep...green light. Good, right? Maybe not...

This rather large device was connected via a USB cable, and had multiple sensors/lenses. Was my picture just taken by two different angles to 3D map my face for comparison to a facial recognition database? ...or at the least, a basic picture? Some may say I'm paranoid. But there have been "issues" with this spa in the past. I specifically did not call ahead to stay under LEO's radar, by not exposing my caller ID. Luckily I had a mask on, hiding half of my uniqueness.

...thoughts?

These devices are widely used now in office buildings. There is one at the entrance to my doctor's office. I think one lens is for the camera that's supposed to help you positioning your face (or forehead) at the right spot. The other lens is for the infrared sensor that actually takes the temperature. Of course whatever the USB cable is connected, they can choose to record the video/image along with the temperature reading at their discretion. By the way, these things are now available on Amazon. Some can recognize faces (not sure if masked) so they know you have been there previously.

@yougen - Understood. But, why would a spa use a $700 device, when a $40 handheld IR thermometer would do?
Depending on the model, they could be much cheaper. I have seen some for $120 on Aliexpress from China. They are basically a repackaged sub $100 Android notepad with a $10 IR temp sensor.

In any case, they probably figured having something like that shows they are taking the covid seriously. Lately, the couple of places I went to are not even taking temperature when the door opened. Of course, taking temperature really doesn't mean much. If I have a fever, the last place I would go to is a spa.

I seems to me that if they want your picture, they have it - either by means of the security camera you walk through that most places have used for decades, or surreptitiously. And your DNA, and the notes they keep.
