My advice is the search for the word "burner" here at the site. You’ll get lots of prior discussions.

In the end, the answer to your question is "it depends." I currently use a burner app for a simple layer of anonymous protection if and when I call providers. In a prior life, I needed a higher level of protection. I had a stash of burner phones I bought from CVS or similar store. Paid cash for the phone and the cards. Fake name, email, address, etc.

Neither. I’m a retired widower with no children. No need to hide anything from anybody.
I don’t use my personal # because a whole lot of personal information can be found online with your #.
Yes you probably have less to worry about than someone with a wife and kids but does anyone really want a provider knowing your home address and relatives?
Wouldn’t be the 1st time someone tried blackmailing.
Just my humble opinion.

Hiding a burner phone from a partner sounds like missing impossible to me. My job is not one where my employer would give me a corporate fun, which to me, is the *only* plausible explanation to having a second phone. What the F would I say when my partner inevitably asks ”hey, why do you have a second phone?”

MySudo and other texting apps are really great for this. Also, proton mail is great. Make sure to turn off all notifications on those apps.

I use a burner, no problem hiding it.
Most of my encounters occur by contacting providers directly and not the shop.
Once made the mistake of giving my regularly used phone # to a provider whom I was getting close with and she kept texting me. Wife got really suspicious but fortunately I never use my real name and chalked it up to wrong person.
Had to correct that quickly.

I use protonMail and a phone/ text app. Download the app each time I need to use and Delete after using. I Deny requests for app to access contacts/ send notification. Allow app to use microphone only when I am calling. Delete all chat/ call/ voicemail history after each use. Proton mail id acts as authentication / login info for the app. Also use the email to store contact info. Has worked well for me for more than a year with no cost. Only limitation is the app has limit on daily free messages/ calls. Normally not an isssue unless I am heavy chatting some ATF/ new provider pre/ post session.

Pros and Cons?
What do y'all use and why?
If you need a burner go on ebay. You can buy Tracfone flipfones 2 for 59.95 and a years worth of service on each phone. The service includes 1500 min and 1500 texts and 1 year service. Like I read earlier from EMC easy to hide in trunk under jack if you have a spare. Best to have a car charger for phone because phones at this price don't have great batteries.

I have a cheap tracfone flip phone (I will upgrade as soon as my minutes run out). You can buy at target along with a card for minutes that I pay for in cash. Nothing traceable. I'm able to hid the phone at work but it is stressful. One time I had my 5 year old find it in my car. I quickly distracted her with videos on my iphone. I changed my shorts shortly after :p. Until my SO is completely out of the picture I will not use the app. I can't have it show up in my apple account or be found on my phone. There's no excuse for that app other than hiding something. I can always say I just found the tracfone, charged it to see if it works and then just hung onto it.

Does TracFone require ID to register?

I've used Google Voice for years. Never a problem and always free. Easy to get a new number too, if necessary. I also have it attached to a fake Gmail account.

I use google voice (separate account) and a tracphone smartphone burner. Google voice is good for 90% of things but if you want LINE or WeChat you will need a separate phone.

Well if you port a real number to google voice LINE may work but WeChat is draconian on being on a real phone and they will ban you at the drop of a hat.

While I originally set up WeChat on my mobile, I was able to switch it over to my Google Voice number. I have Line too, but I don't use it for hobby purposes, so having it linked to my actual mobile number is no big deal.
