Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Looks like Tractphone is the way to go. I'd rather not run into any surprises on my mainline since people can easily look your number up or spam you. Plus I heard Burner actually uses Twilio which has information linked back to your phone number. Can never be too safe.

I have two phones, If your budget permits. New phone hardware is cheap these days 150 for a decent phone. My company pays for the primary phone monthly with Verizon. I pay for my hobby phone and is either with cricket wireless or TMobile. Here is a tip, If you ever need to stop your hobby phone for a few months or what ever duration. Park your existing number at tossable digits and pay just a few dollars each month. This way you can save the number and still receive and send text through their website. You and I know changing a phone number can be troublesome and have to verify again with orgs

Great tip about keeping the hobby phone in service just to retain the number. You can also do this by purchasing those refill cards. Make sure you look for a long duration such as 90 days rather that the amount of minutes. Some companies will let you roll the minutes/data over as long as you keep your phone in service.

Mint Mobil is about $200 for a year - unlimited calls and text, 3G of 4g, slower after that. There are some trials available. Not a bad deal if you want data as well.

OP have you tried apps that have the ability to make calls/texts? Try TextNow. TextNow is free and amazing and you can use any email to register the line. Hope that helps.

I second tracphone. Read up on the two types of plans they have though, one is normal, the other is 4glte.

Use the 365 day basic plan and $10 addon data to it (sending pics, translate app, etc). I travel, so remembering $5 a month is a pain in the dick. Roll up to a place with free wifi after they are closed to update if you dont want to deal with wasting data.

Does anyone know how to add minutes to your tracfone? I recently purchased some minutes buying a tracfone add minutes card to your plan at a convenience store. I’ve been trying to add the minutes to my phone which I haven’t used since the pandemic and it’s saying phone number not registered and I can’t even add the SIM card number which they say has 19 numbers mine has 20 numbers smh. I have no idea what to do now is my burner phone gone for good? I’ve been trying add the minutes and even customer service can’t help me I’m lost last time I could just buy the card scratch off the back enter the code directly and my minutes would be added instantly now I have a app the website and customer service and I still can’t add my minutes. Isn’t it supposed to be easier as time goes by why is this so difficult is my phone outdated where a phone card can’t even add money I bought this phone like 6 years ago last used it right before the shutdown from the pandemic Began help!

I’ve been using Tracfone.

So 1st question is: since you haven’t used the phone for so long, and I am assuming that it was kept off during the 2+ years, do you still own the number?

I think I do at least I know I never canceled myself or anything like that on my end. Will they cancel a number if not in use for awhile?

It’s a prepaid service. When your service day balance went to zero and you didn’t add air time in time, they could cancel your service and re-assign the number if there was someone signing up in your general area.

So turn the phone on, find out how many service days left.

I have a tracfone and ran out of time for a month or 2 but they didn't reassign my number. If you go into the settings and dig down, you can find the phone number. I can't imagine they'd give it away if your phone still shows the number.
I'm no phone expert but I have mongered in the past 24 hours ;o)

If you like suffering from time to time, I'm still using old phone with FreedomPop (still grandfathered in their Basic 200 $1.99/mo, 200 MB, 500 texts, 200 min, needs crappy app plus like $7.99/6 mo for multimedia texts (though it looks like the last time they charged me was Feb & Aug 2020 but I'm still getting images (e.g., pics of location from PO)).

Keep it mostly in airplane mode since it tethers to my phone hotspot or public WiFi when I'm out. Working good since Feb 2019 but before that, every 8-16 mo there would be an issue such as no SMS or can't call or can't receive calls (though only had to change phone # once; usually reset or new SIM).

Any prepaid plans with data where you pay everything with cash..such as buy SIM card from a Best Buy and buy top ups from Best Buy or grocery stores?
Yes. You are describing Tracfone and many others. Go shopping!
