Being Blackmailed

I am being blackmailed by someone I met on a dating site. They started out being real friendly and have chatted with me via text messages for a very long time to set me up. Now they are demanding $500 via PayPal. I checked their PayPal account and it is in the U.K. They are using what I assume are fake numbers. As anyone experienced anything like this? If so, any advice would be appreciated. They are threatening to expose my online activity to my family if I don't comply.

Obviously I know I did something stupid so I don't need to be reminded of that.

Probably Nigerians, Russians or like behind this. Cancel membership in dating site. My gut tells me you did not use a burner phone number so I would erase everything (think factory reset) Then I would just ignore it and let them move on to their next target.

Hey
Similar thing happened to me. At least it seems like it. Remember your a decent person with a conscious and they are trying to exploit you on your terms. In our world paying for a non-dsiclosure would be valid because its a contractual agreement. In their world there is no decency so anything they say is worthless. So there is no one to talk to to let alone pay. And remember they never want to actually give out your info bec then they have nothing to extort you with! Heck, they don't even know you got their message. In my case I didn't respond and it went away. Hope it helps and sorry your stuck in this situation.

Happen to me a few years ago. I actually told them to fuck off. And it worked. They threatened me. I deleted all social media and the dating site. It went away. If all they want is 500 dollars they dont have much on you.

I'd pay - offer to double it if they promise to erase all evidence they have against you. Don't live with his sword of Damocles' forever!

Obviously the black mailers are not going to erase the evidence even after you pay. $500 isn't much, but it's just gonna get worse from there. Just tell them to fuck off and erase everything. if they reach out to your family just say it's fake. (or simply own up to what you did.... Judging from the online nature of it I guess you did not have any physical encounters..so I guess nothing serious happened..) these mothafuckers should suffer the same pain.

Never pay. If you’ve only chatted it’s nothing to be afraid of at all. Words are words nothing more. Why so scared?

In my experience, those were always people who posed to be from
Colombia that tried to scare and blackmail me cause we’ve chatted. I have received death threats and photos/videos of murdered people front thise even. I seriously doubt that Russians would do stuff like that. But whoever does it - never pay. It won’t bear the fruits you’re hoping gir.

Motto of the story. You pay to play, you gotta have a phone to burn. Not sure it would make a difference in this case. Let it go and try not to let this cause too many lost nites sleep. They may still try to contact you a couple more times in a futile effort to persuade you. Stand strong, this shit happens. If it ain't your phone it'll be your laptop.

Why would anyone trust the word of a blackmailer to erase the evidence? Pay once and they will be back for seconds, thirds and more.
I think Kantuchdis was joking.

Once you pay, they will have proof of your payment via Paypal. In other words, it will be much harder to deny if they follow through the next time they threaten you. Once you pay, you are their annuity forever.

There's another scam where you get an email with a password associated with your email that's available on the dark web because of one of the various data breaches. They say that they have taken control of your computer camera and have video of you doing something raunchy. They also claim to have all the email addresses in your contact list and from your email, and threaten to release the video to everyone if you don't pay. It's unnerving, because it's probably a password that really connects to you, but the threat is total bs.
