Been starting to do some tax numbers. It looks like New Jersey is going to pop me for 9 percent on the proceeds of my home sale. Basically because I moved out of state. The exemption does not apply because I left the great Garden State.

Another thing to frost my balls during a pandemic.

Sorry to hear. I was under the impression the impression that the so called exit tax was more like a withholding to make sure those exiting the state would pay any taxes due on the sale of their home.

But as is the case with everything in NJ, its extremely difficult to get accurate information.

In NJ, nothing would surprise me.

I have to speak to a CPA and I will. But I have already seen examples of people who sell their home in New Jersey and then rent a place for the remainder of the year within the state. This permits an exclusion of $250,000 for single filers and $500,000 for couples.

I’ve always paid my fair share and have never been audited. This loss of the exclusion because of a move across a state line seems arbitrary.

I came across this article back in August and decided to save it. It might have some helpful information.

And the so-called “exit tax” causes a lot of confusion for home sellers.

“Many believe that this is a tax imposed when you sell property in New Jersey and move out of state, but this is incorrect, said Joseph Sarnecki, a certified financial planner with U.S. Financial Services in Fairfield.

It is not an additional tax, but simply a pre-payment of potential income tax based on the sale of the home, he said.

Specifically, New Jersey requires you to withhold the amount of either 8.97% — New Jersey's highest tax bracket — of the profit, or 2% percent of the total selling price, whichever is higher, he said.”

...

“This is basically New Jersey’s way of getting you to file a final tax return after leaving the state. It is not an extra tax.”

By all means talk to a CPA.

If there is a way for New Jersey to rip off taxpayers they will find it. Look at the states that have the most people leaving NJ is always 1st or 2nd.

There does seem to be a lot of confusion over this tax. Once I get this 2020 tax issue addressed, that is it for me with New Jersey. If the exclusion lines up with the Federal exclusion and there is no funny business with the state, then I can deal with it.

Took some cash today out of the portfolio.

Wish I could spend it on the ladies down here without concern about croaking off.

But at least the state income tax on it is no longer going to the extortionists at the NJEA.

North Carolina has a flat 5.25 percent income tax.

Lefty what do you mean the Gov just raised taxes again, but is a hero because in the last few days he expanded abortion where a dr. no longer be present and made diversity training part of the school curriculum. Now the kids will be taught important things since they do not learn math, science, etc. The inner city schools will think this is great sadly it will need to be written at a 2nd grade level so the high schoolers can understand it.

As best as I can tell, the property tax bill in my old town is going up by 10 percent.

The locals with kids in the school system vote yes for everything, so the increase does not surprise me.

Don't mind paying taxes if the money wasn't wasted and the schools were better. Going to be over 30k in property taxes soon. Light at the end of the tunnel going to retire and move sometime next year.

I’ll give credit where credit is due. My friend in New Jersey who is diabetic has been scheduled for his vaccine shot.

My friend in North Carolina, who is older, diabetic, and is a Vietnam veteran who was seriously wounded by a sniper in Vietnam, still has no appointment, nothing, nada.

Well, finally made the big move and living down south now.

Have to start meeting some of the southern belles soon. If they are okay with this Yankee, I have cash to spend.

All of the "it takes a village" people in New Jersey will have to find someone else to cough up that free daycare and college for their kids.

Good to be here.
Lived in Atlanta for 1.5 years. Remember "Bless your heart" and "You should come over for dinner sometime" means go fuck yourself. As explained by two gay friends life long Southerners.
