I have been and have mongered. It was in Mumbai, 5 years ago.
Depends on where you are, big cities like Mumbai, Delhi you're fine and have plenty of options, from cheap to high-end model material. Depends on your spending power.
Smaller towns could be different.
As a westerner, just dont expect to walk-in to a place and do expect to pay some premium.
Best/Safest options are out calls to your location.

Depends on which city you're going to. Sanitation levels are different like acheron mentioned, so that's an issue coming from the Western world. Been there over 20 times, it is possible but you have to understand how India works to be prepared for how the Indians who are bound to their birth caste works. the international guide has a health summary of options. You would do better heading to Singapore and visiting Little India, one of their 5 legal geylangs. An easy flight from India, maybe 5 hours, many options.
