The latest thing now is a 10 Week Re-Education Program for arrested mongers. Joseph Stalin says hello.
BELLEVUE, Wash. – Twelve men and a Ferrari got caught up in an undercover bust in Bellevue. Officers arrested them after they knocked on a hotel door expecting to meet a prostitute.
Now Bellevue is taking a new approach to discourage them from ever buying sex again. It goes beyond trying to shame these men. The idea is to get them to see the harm they are causing to themselves, the sex workers, and the entire community.
Prostitutes don't typically walk the streets of Bellevue. They are in hotels and apartment complexes with meet-ups arranged through online ads.
“There's hundreds, hundreds of ads,” said Capt. Dave Sanabria with the Bellevue Police Department.
Police adopted that same approach when they set up a sting operation in a local hotel and 12 men came knocking. One drove up in a Ferrari before he was arrested.
Police said buying sex is a rampant crime with terrible consequences.
“These women are being trafficked,” Sanabria said. “They are often the victims of a lot of underreported crime: rape, robbery, aggravated assault."
Now Bellevue city attorneys will push to require those arrested to attend a 10-week program run by Seattle Against Slavery.
