I think the percentage is much more significant based on personal observation as well as some basic logic. It would not be the oldest profession if the numbers were that small. I travel a lot and always run into other mongers or drop into places when at least a couple of rooms are in use at any random time, and I know there are a dozen other places in that town occupied simultaneously. In cities, it might be hundreds at any given hour. Considering that the the sheer number of places in NYC, across the country and overseas that are ongoing businesses that pay rent and presumably earn enough profit to justify the risk, as well as the websites devoted to the hobby or that rely on paid advertising, it’s hard to imagine that the hobby is limited to a handful of men. Just my opinion.
I’ll use the sample size of 300 members whom I have met in this site, ISG, WSG and ISOC.
For overseas mongering, half of the members are either active or retired LE or truck drivers ages 40 and above. They seldom visit a FS amp. They prefer to fly to Brazil, DR or Thailand around 2-3 times a year.
For amps here in the States, most of the members are attorneys ages 30 to 60.
Landlords like myself, they seldom monger at amps. Instead, they have a SB who they fully support (especially among the Chinese and Koreans).
So for amp mongering, I’d say the percentage is very high among attorneys.
